Think About It: Pig-headed Lapse

The dictionary defines someone who is pig-headed as being stubborn, contrary, perverse, obstinate, stupid, dense, inflexible, willful, unyielding, stiff-necked, wrong-headed, self-willed, or bull-headed. You can pick any of these adjectives to associate with the City of Honolulu's decision to let lapse a contract for feral pig traps in Hoo'omaluhia Botanical Garden. The contract expired two months ago, and thus the pigs are starting to run wild, again.

The Honolulu mayor's administration said the renewal of the contract was not automatic, and the City is dealing with a shortfall of funds exceeding $140-million. Thus, it is now incumbent upon the City Council to renew the pig eradication contract, and the council won't be meeting on the issues for over a week, which gives the prolific porkers time to leave their mark throughout the park, as they defecate, eat up shrubs and uproot native plant species. So, until such time as the approval process takes place, it will be a smorgasbord heaven for the wild pigs.

Perhaps the oinkers in Kaneohe can call in the somewhat wild dogs that can now run amok and the chickens that are proliferating due to more budget cutbacks. This might not be George Orwell's "Animal Farm", but the critters are starting to have a lot more leeway than the people as inane cuts are made or round-‘em-up contracts don't get renewed. The contract for about $50,000 for the pig traps represents three-hundredths of 1% of the expected shortfall. Can't we cut in other places to prove a point? This pig-headed move was a real stinker. Think about it…
