Think About It: The Giving Season

We're in the midst of that annual four-week window where a great number of sporting events draw attention to our islands. The Diamondhead Basketball Classic, Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, Sony Open golf tournament, NFL Pro Bowl, and Champions Tour golf event at Hualalai on the Big Island all take place between December 22nd and January 19th. Add in the Triple Crown of Surfing and the Honolulu Marathon over the past month or so, and there are quite a number of events held here over a short window of time that require precision coordination, timing, and helpers.

A lot of people locally volunteer a lot of their time to help make these events work, and then the natural beauty of our islands does its thing to help showcase Hawaii to people all over the country. Volunteerism in Hawaii is one of the many bright facets of the "aloha spirit", and the humble manner by which people simply do the jobs that need to get done at these big events without fanfare or expectation of external rewards tells you a lot about the souls of our neighbors and friends who contribute. Some people have the wherewithal to give financially to help others in need, while others give of themselves to help ensure that these annual events turn out great year after year.

When these big events are showcased on TV across the land, people see our vistas and some of our unique, cultural offerings, but they don't get to see the backbone of these showcases- the administrators, the assistants, the coordinators, the people that hold the ropes, or those that kindly drive the vans from parking lots to venues. So here's a tip of the hat in this giving season to those who truly make a difference behind the scenes during these months of nationally-seen sporting events emanating from Hawaii. Think About it…
