Think About It: Music, Man

Suffering a bit from those post-New year's blues, or maybe just a bit tired from all the shopping, eating, and socializing, and now it's back to the grind? There is a panacea for all that ails you, and it's free. It's music, just listen to the music. Whether it's the Brothers Cazimero or the Doobie Brothers, John Cruz or Elton John, Raiatea Helm or Levon Helm, B.E.T. or ELO, the Beamers or the Beatles, Gabby or Britney, just crank it up and groove.

As the New Yorker magazine put it, "the idea that music can have therapeutic value is far from new: in ancient Egypt, chant therapies were seen as integral to the healing process, while in ancient Greece, both Aristotle and Plato embraced its beneficial properties, writing that it could help people become better human beings and overcome emotional difficulties during the process of catharsis. The first major movement in modern psychology, psychoanalysis, held that music could offer an effective means of sublimation—expressing inappropriate desires in socially appropriate ways—and greater access to a patient's unconscious."

So don't get angry or even, don't pout or fret, turn off the phone, and let the music play. Transport yourself to a place and a moment where time stops, and great memories and therapeutic feelings seep in as you choose your tunes. How great would some local music feel to help ease that rush hour traffic angst? And you have control. Nothing brings people together like music... nothing. Everyone can tap a foot and sing or hum along to a favorite. 2014 resolution tip- play more music; attend more concerts; find more artists to enjoy. Think about it…
