Think About It: Hawaii’s Very Own

Two of the most popular local performers of all time were in town recently, and many here and afar are celebrating their success. Bruno Mars, after just five years on the international scene, is already arguably the most successful local musician of all-time- based on unit sales, Grammy awards, and concert sellouts. He performed three shows here to adoring hordes of fans of all ages. Once again, it's too bad we don't have a performance venue sized between the 7,000 seat Blaisdell Arena and the 50,000 seat Aloha Stadium. Bruno's current stage configuration would not have worked at Aloha Stadium, though surely he could have filled that venue for a show… or two.

Mars peppered his shows with local references and proved to be a pop performer at the top of his game. And speaking of being at the top of the game, how about the performance of Michelle Wie in winning the LPGA event at Ko Olina? Too much is made of supposedly unfulfilled potential because she started off over a dozen years ago as a brash, mesmerizing 12-year old who wanted to take on the golf world- male and female. Good for her; some of it worked, some of it- not so much. Michelle has held her head up and remained upbeat and refreshing in the face of criticism and is now realizing great success in her chosen field with passion. She's doing a nice job as she represents Hawaii on the international stage. And, she never let on if the vultures circling overhead during the tough years bothered her. Plus, she earned a really nice college degree to boot.

After her win on April 19, Wie was trending #1 on Facebook and Twitter, which is apparently cool, but certainly means that there is universal buzz (not buzzards) surrounding Hawaii's golf superstar. Here we have a couple of local  kids who, coincidentally, went to adjacent high schools- Mars at Roosevelt and Wie at Punahou- and are now at the top of the world, bringing nice notoriety to the 808 with every dance move and chip shot.  What can you say, except we like what's going on with you Bruno and Michelle- just the way you are. Think about it…
