Think About It: Weather Or Not

So how prepared were you this past week? How much forethought did you give to the wild weather that was presumed to be coming our way? Did you think beyond a day or two after the onset of wind and rain? Did you have plans for keeping medication refrigerated if the power was out for a week, if that's an issue for you? Did you think about getting to and caring for a disabled or elderly family member living in a high rise? Did you have enough pet food if the stores were closed? Did you think about being forced to stay home due to trees being down or roads being flooded for a few days?

Or, did you passively look at this double hurricane whammy approaching and say "ho hum"? Did you calmly prognosticate that nothing would happen, because the last time wild winds threatened, nothing really bad happened, and the last few tsunami warnings saw just minor ripples on our shores? Sure, you can roll the dice and under-prepare; you can avoid stocking up on the basics, like water, batteries, a portable radio, and easy-to-prepare foods.

But what happens when we really do get hit really hard? What if you have no electricity and the harbors are damaged, so there are no food deliveries, no credit cards can be used, no running water, no public services, no work, no salaries, no easy access to 30-story condos, no refrigeration for medical supplies, etc., etc.? Are you really ready? Or are you just going to continue to make assumptions based on our past good fortune? And what might the price be for complacency or "ainokea"?  This last nature warning might give you reason to do more than just… think about it…
