Think About It: Wind Woes And Wise Ways

It's tough enough making a go of it in the agricultural world these days without more havoc being wreaked by Mother Nature. The Big Island has seen its share of drought and unwanted insects over the years, but the brutal winds of Tropical Storm Isele caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage in the Puna and Kau districts. Papaya trees, which often have three-year growth cycles, were simply snapped in half. Macadamia nut trees and coffee trees, providers of two cherished Big Island crops, were also devastated by the storm. Relief cannot come fast enough, whether it's in assessment of the damage, or help through disaster assistance programs to help the affected farmers recover as quickly as possible.

Thankfully, there was no human toll from this storm. But the effects of the storm, downgraded from a hurricane, are still being reported on the Big Island. Community assistance and neighbors simply helping neighbors have surely helped wary people without electricity and water start to resurface. And when repairs are made, steps need to be taken in affected areas to perhaps mitigate consequences to man-made structures the next time nature comes to visit, because rest assured, this will happen again, and we had better continue to prepare in advance.

Earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, flooding- we've seen it all here over the past 10-years. Have we learned enough and acted to help minimize major problems the next time? Are we using our resources and capital in the smartest ways to help ensure that the preventable damage is prevented? Now would be a good time to ask aspiring political office holders what they are doing and will do to help protect our very foundations. Now would be a good time to reassess your own plans. It's August, and more storms are undoubtedly brewing in the Pacific. Don't be afraid; be ready. Think about it…
