Think About It: Wheeze of Progress

Financial woes for under-funded University of Hawaii athletics…. concerns about finding more than a billion dollars of funding for much-needed infrastructure repairs at UH-Manoa… problems with the election returns and procedures every two years… cost overruns again on the rail project… the homeless moving around like a bad shell game… concerns about a fair evaluation system for public school teachers. No, it's not a bad recurring nightmare; it's not an updated version of the movie "Groundhog Day"; it's simply life as we know it here in paradise.

The same problems, churned over and over, with little demand, outcry, or expectation for solutions. UH athletics simply cannot make ends meet and compete at the level we want it to compete at without annual financial help, and that require more than a one-time, legislative $3-million gift. And yes, winning will help. Crumbling buildings will not get fixed by ignoring the issue. Bi-annual election snafus will not get remedied unless more structure, a better system, and more volunteers come forward, and paid people are held accountable. Rail system cost overruns are sadly predictable, just like every other rosy projection of a government project gone awry. Rating teachers on generic student progress seems inherently unfair, but so does rewarding teachers year after year who simply don't make the grade.

As the late, great Robin Williams once said, "it's not the end of civilization, but you can see it from here". We keep seeing things or pushing issues further down the road that need addressing here, as we simply talk about them, headline them, and remind ourselves that something needs to be done. And then we simply go about our lives and get reminded soon enough that these issues are still out there, just like before. But, hey, we can always visit the refurbished Waikiki Natatorium or the safe and sound Stairway to Heaven, can't we?  Think about it…
