Think About It: A Wonder From Hawaii

On Monday, the late Patsy Mink will receive the highest civilian honor offered in this country- the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Mink's story should be made into a movie, and her tale, along with Dr. Donnis Thompson at UH, is the basis for the wonderful "Rise of the Wahine" documentary which has just been released. Denied entry into medical school due to her gender, Mink made a mockery of the inequalities she saw around her and changed things for good with her authorship of the landmark Title IX gender equity education bill. Mink was a visionary and a hero, rising from humble Maui roots to become the first ever non-Caucasian female elected to serve in this nation's Congress.

Along with Mink, the great Stevie Wonder will be honored with the presidential medal on Monday. So I thought it might be fun to look through Wonder's incredible catalogue of songs and apply some of his song titles that aptly represent or mirror the quest of Ms. Mink. How about "Hold On To Your Dream", "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It", or "I Wish"? Then there's "Isn't She Lovely", "Justice of the Heart", "More Than A Dream", and the emphatic "Signed, Sealed, Delivered". Add in "Somebody Knows, Somebody Cares", "Something To Say", "Superwoman" and finish it off with "You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover" from Wonder's amazing repertoire, and it is truly wonderful to see these two legends from different worlds being honored for their contributions to our nation at the same time.

As we look around in search of difference makers and heroes of today and tomorrow, the acknowledgment of the efforts and passion of Patsy Mink in Washington, D.C., on Monday is a fitting tribute to a daughter of these islands who literally looked up, saw the need for drastic change, and then made it happen. As I'm sure Stevie would admit, she was a "Golden Lady". Think about it…
