Think About It: Thanks, and Giving

I stopped by a fast food restaurant last week and noticed two members of our armed forces in full uniform in line in front of me. After a mere nanosecond of thought, I told the clerk that I would pay for their meals. They both calmly thanked me, and I thanked them for all that they do. While we were getting our drinks, one of the top men casually said, "it's really humbling when someone does something like that for you." I told him it was my pleasure, added, "Happy Thanksgiving", and said something vapid like "well, we should probably have ordered salads."

We often think that we're putting ourselves out there all the time at work or with family and friends, but these warriors are willing to put their lives on the line, for America, and by extension- for you and I. Surely that's worth treating someone to a burger and fries now and then, isn't it? I finished my meal and quietly slipped out; I didn't need to be thanked again or remind them of my appreciation. After all, it's their work, commitment, and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice that allows me to eat burgers and tofu and quinoa, not that I really eat quinoa.

There's no moral here, except that maybe you or I will think more often about splurging and buying a burger and a soda for one of our selfless service providers in uniform, any kind of uniform, the next time we get a chance. Thanksgiving is a spirit, not just a day on a calendar; it can occur anytime, not just on the last Thursday of November. Being thankful and showing it made me feel a bit more complete as a human that day. Happy Thanksgiving!   Think about it…
