Think About It: Hiking Hints

Because it wasn't serious, it's almost humorous, in a clueless sort of way… two hikers last week were plucked from the mountains in Kuliouou just west of Hawaii Kai. The almost humorous part is that these hikers, while obviously under-prepared for the trek, did manage to take a hula hoop with them on their three hour excursion. Why one might need a hula hoop while hiking is hard to fathom, so we might assume that this trek wasn't well thought out in advance.

While water, hiking shoes, snacks and a clue are all more logical items to take with you while hiking, a hula hoop could be considered a useful resource to some if used it to divert your mind from the predicament you had gotten yourself into by wandering deep into the hills without the wherewithal, supplies, or energy to climb back out. Our mountains, streams, coves, and other natural beauty spots are surely alluring to locals and visitors. We encourage people to explore the great outdoors, but not without thinking ahead, planning, and being prepared.

So please, use common sense to save everyone the costs, time, and effort to come find you when you don't or can't get out. Luckily, this hiking incident ended without incident as I'm assuming the hula hoop was unharmed and, according to reports, the hikers only suffered from exhaustion, and perhaps a wee bit of embarrassment. Between hikers, boaters, swimmers, and others, sometimes people just don't think before going out into the wild in their endeavor to have a good time. Don't get lost or get injured through naivete, get engaged and be prepared for your outdoor sojourns in Hawai'i, or don't go. Think about it…
