Think About It: Downtown Doings

I was downtown for a meeting last week and came to the realization that there is nowhere in Hawaii where every type of person from our local bouillabaisse can be seen in such a small area. If you take the entirety of the basic downtown area- let's say from Richards Street to Maunakea, and from Nimitz Highway to Vineyard Boulevard, the combination of people, lifestyles, foods, interests, shops, visions is unparalleled anywhere else in our state.

From college students to bankers, from innovators to people trying to find a meal, from babagonoush to pierogis to the normal Asian ethnic fare, from trinket shops to luxury items, from street hawkers to street gawkers, from storefront preachers to college teachers, it's all right there, on display, every day, side by side. From the highest priced commercial real estate to the cardboard homes of the unfortunate, from the sweet smell of success to the ungodly stench of urine in too many parks and parking lots, downtown surely has got it all. From little kids playing in school to big kids playing in their glistening office buildings... From the nouveau art galleries to the graffiti artwork on the decrepit walls- it's all there in providing a sensory sensation that must be witnessed to be believed.

Most major markets require you to walk or ride miles to take it all in, but in our downtown, you can pretty much cover it all, the good and the bad, in less than one square mile. This mélange of humanity stretches with vistas of high priced wines to high-pitched whines from the unstable. And yet, for the most part, they all somehow manage to get along when it comes to Honolulu's downtown. Think about it…
