Think About It: Drone Moan

Look, up in the sky… it's a bird, it's a plane… actually, it's a creepy drone. Yes the drone moan has begun, and it's happening right here on Kauai, as locals are starting to get riled about flying cameras above them while they try to relax in privacy or swim without being burdened by unwanted and unnecessary whirlybirds from above.

It's really only a matter of time before injury is caused- a drone taking pictures it shouldn't, a drone diving on to someone's head due to malfunction or pilot error, a drone getting too close to the airport somewhere. And those would just be mistakes, not problems due to malicious intent. Those days are coming, too. Good luck having the police trying to police the skies for these noisy, insects-on-steroids, invasive, clunky gizmos. Drones can be great for gathering scenic footage, mapping hard-to-get-at areas and agricultural fields, providing vital military information, and even for delivering essential supplies.

But it would be naïve to not see the great danger- to our privacy and to our health- that these unmanned mechanical sky hawks might pose as they become more prevalent, less costly, and easier to obtain and fly. So while Kauai residents have raised an early caution and concern, it sadly won't be the last. Nor should it be. The FAA should have regulations in place within a year. Drones, like syringes and the internet, can provide good, but can easily be misused for nefarious purposes, and we'll see how technology, personal space and personal freedom clash in the years to come in Hawaii and elsewhere as we all get buzzed. Think about it…
