Think About It: True Flu Clues

Plenty of people locally still resist getting an annual flu shot. It won't get me, they say. I've never had it before- either the flu or the shot. And then there's the bad myth that spreads like a nasty virus when someone says that a friend of mine got the flu from the flu shot. Wrong, impossible, not true. The flu shot is a so-called "dead virus" injection; that means the virus is dead. End of story. 0 chance to get the flu from the shot. Aloha.

There is live virus sometimes used in nasal flu sprays, but medical science has removed the flu-inducing parts to ensure that no one inhales a possible case of the flu. When people do feel like they have residual effects from a flu shot, beyond a minor sore arm for a day or two, it is a case of bad timing, where you contact a cold bug or something that provides possibly similar symptoms to the flu. Again, you cannot catch the flu from a flu shot.

Another myth is that flu is only dangerous for the elderly. According to WebMD, "the flu can become risky for anyone, even healthy young adults. Some of the most susceptible people to seasonal influenza are young children. 90% of H1N1 swine flu deaths have been in people under age 65, while 90% of seasonal flu deaths are in the elderly. And both seasonal and pandemic flu are particularly dangerous for very young children". 43 states currently have reported widespread flu outbreak. So don't be flu-lish; check with your doctor, get vaccinated; don't just think about it…
