Think About It: What We’ve Not Got

Last week provided a stark reminder of some things we don't have in Hawaii. Some explain these things away as the price we pay for paradise and isolation. For example, we don't have the infrastructure and emergency services capability to deal with an outbreak of a disease like the flu. Currently, many local facilities are hard-pressed to deal with the flu surge we're now seeing, and it could get worse if people don't take care of themselves, don't get vaccinated while they're healthy, or don't avoid contaminating others.

We also don't have the competition levels here to bring slowly decreasing gas prices in line with the prices we keep hearing about on the mainland. Surely it costs more to truck, and then ship, gas to Hawaii. Refining is limited here, and costs more to process crude here. We now see prices sneaking under $3.00 per gallon, while the mainland is closing in on a low of under $2.000 a gallon for gas. It's just the way it is, as Bruce Hornsby would sing.

And finally, we don't have much sense of urgency in solidifying positions at UH. We have ostensibly an interim men's basketball coach reporting to a lame duck athletics director who reports to an interim chancellor at UH- Manoa. Good luck interviewing candidates for positions that don't have an anointed boss yet. But that is the charge of those on the search committee for a new AD, and that is the job someone's gotta do in finalizing a men's basketball head coach. Surprising? Not really, and that's the sad part. We've got a lot to be thankful for in Hawaii. Yet we also realize there are a bunch of things we've not got. Think about it…
