Think About It: College Counts

A recent report notes that more Hawaii high school students are college bound these days, up about 11% over the college matriculation rate of local students five years ago. About 56% of our high school seniors head off to college, in spite of recent surveys and articles that question the overall value of college and its cost burdens. But here's one thing no report based on pure numbers will point out. College is far more than an academic exercise. If a quality life is partly reflected by having options and choices as you go along, than it is hard to argue that increased education- knowing more stuff about more stuff- provides an individual with more confidence and greater options about where to go next or what to do next in life.

How many people in their 20s, 30s, or 40s lament not having made better use of their high school days? How many now realize that perhaps, just perhaps, they might have had more avenues to explore, which might have led to greater financial flexibility and more ability to seek alternative careers, if only they had worked a little harder or striven to get to the next level during those turbulent teen years.

College is not for everyone. And everyone who goes to college does not take full advantage of the opportunity afforded them. Having more options, choices, and knowledge is a plus when it comes to choosing a career rather than feeling forced into a job. Being happy in what you do sure beats simply showing up every day, just like in a personal relationship- and education is one piece of the puzzle to help give you a confidence edge and a sense of accomplishment. Here's hoping that the Hawaii college numbers continue to climb. Think about it…
