Think About It: Get Jazzed!

Some good news out of Waikiki last week. First it was announced that May visitor arrivals were up 9% vs. a year earlier, but perhaps more importantly, visitor spending from West Coast arrivals was up 20%. Extra air seats and a strong domestic market are helping the industry recover from a slow first quarter.

Secondly, a new draw in Waikiki was also announced, for locals and visitors, as the Blue Note Jazz Club will open a location in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort early next year. Jazz is quite popular in Asia; Blue Note runs multiple clubs in Japan and plans to open clubs in China soon. Blue Note's universal booking office should also allow us to see more top notch artists as they make their way across U.S. clubs and head to the Far East. A jazz club in Hawaii is unique, and the tie-in with Blue Note gives this venue a great chance to succeed.

Blue Note Records, arguably the most influential blues label of all-time, opened in 1939, and the current roster includes headliners like Anita Baker, Norah Jones, the Robert Glasper Trio, Jason Moran, and Wayne Shorter. How great will it be for a concert-starved town like Honolulu to see a mix of local jazz and Hawaiian music artists sharing the same stage and maybe even jamming with jazz legends from Blue Note and other hip labels? And might this new club be the latest aid in spurring tourism growth from China, as Blue Note plans to open at least three music clubs there in the coming years? So get jazzed about this new opportunity as East meets West meets Hawaii in early 2016 as Blue Note gets set to play a new note for music fans locally. Think about it…
