Think About It: Decisions, Decisions

We're studying the efficacy of barriers and access at Laniakea, again. We're studying whether to save, relocate, or start over with an aging Aloha Stadium. We've been studying what to do with the Waikiki Natatorium and with the so-called Stairway to Heaven in the Koolau mountain range for over two decades. We're studying ideas about dealing with the homeless and addressing responsibilities and respect surrounding the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea.

We tend to study, analyze, meet, re-study, and then call for a new commission to analyze on lots of issues in Hawai`i. Often, it seems that we don't come to solutions in a timely manner when the only absolute truth is that you're never going to get 100% agreement or happiness when decisions are made and people's lives and emotions are tied to those decisions. But decisions must be made, on all of these issues, and many more locally.

That's what leadership is all about. That's what serving the people is about, understanding that some people won't be happy when conclusions are reached and action is taken. That's what people expect from people in charge. Make the tough decisions, carefully.  But none of these issues simply go away or have more clarity by just having yet one more study, site visit, assessment, committee, or public forum- all of which should have been done on all of these projects at the get-go and during fact-finding. Let's get concrete decisions on many, if not all, of these hanging issues, and be prepared for the repercussions from those who don't get their way. Think about it…
