Think About It: Ant On & On

I don't know about you, but I'll be partying this weekend to help celebrate the fact that September is- you guessed it- Stop the Ant Month here in Hawaii. The proclamation was made by Governor Ige to help remind homeowners and landlords to keep the pesky critters from taking over or at least making their lives uncomfortable, something ants have been trying to do for an estimated 100-million years. And surely fire ants and other crawlers are no laughing matter, but as we celebrate Stop the Ant Month in true anti-ant fashion with parties and fond recollections of kitchen cabinet invasions and dog food incursions, we might consider a few other months to celebrate non-traditional events locally, because any time is a good time to celebrate, right?

How about a Stop the Leaks Month, to remind officials to check our aging infrastructure to prevent the seemingly non-stop sewer line and water main breaks. Yes, we have old lines, but perhaps more coordination to test in advance could preclude some problems. How about a Transparency Month for all elected officials. Transparency is a word thrown about just as much as transgender these days, and there surely is great value to having at least one month where we actually have transparency in what goes on, like how favors get repaid, and not just lip service or campaign rhetoric come October of every even year.

How about a Keiki Education month, where we actually resolve age old issues like providing books for everyone, getting cooler air and working restrooms in our schools, instead of just talking about it annually. Yes, we know you care. But we'd have to see real action taken in Keiki Education Month. So celebrate Stop the Ant Month with your loved ones and friends, and keep those darned critters at bay. But remember, simple awareness isn't the proper answer to all that ails us… action is. Think about it…
