Think About It: Entertainment Tonight, Or Any Night...

The Los Angeles Lakers recently came to town and sold out two exhibition games at the Stan Sheriff Center. That means 20,000 people paid to watch high octane practices between the Lakers and the Utah Jazz. And most akamai sports fans know that exhibition games normally don't feature the stars or starters for too long, as the coaching staffs prefer to see the new additions to the roster under pressure situations early in the season.

So for a town that has seen the Lakers play here numerous times before, and most of those times were in far better days for the franchise, it came as a bit of a shock to some that the games were not only sold out, but that tickets on re-sale sites were going for over $500! Yes, no question about it, the chance to see Kobe Bryant one last time- even briefly- certainly was a major draw, but perhaps what this event shows yet again is that Hawaii loves a big time show- be it a concert or a sporting event.

From Bruno Mars to the Lakers to the upcoming Janet Jackson shows and the sure-to-be-hot "Book Of Mormon" theatrical production next year, Hawaii WILL support a perceived quality event. It's just too bad we don't get more of them here. Honolulu, per capita, is possibly the largest city in the country with the least amount of big name performers gracing our stages. Equipment costs, travel costs, rental arrangements, staging intricacies, timing- there are many factors, but let's hope that these recent sellouts spur more local promoters and mainland entities to entertain us more often in the coming years. Chance ‘um! Think about it…
