Think About It: Something Fishy Here

There's something fishy going on here… and that's a good thing. October is Hawaii Seafood Month, which is tied in with the fact that October has been designated as National Seafood Month. I found this out at a wonderful event at MW Restaurant last week that showcased some great cuisine from our ocean waters. The month-long campaign will celebrate local fishers, retailers, wholesalers, restaurants, and other businesses that touch or are touched by our phenomenal local fishing industry.

Hawaii has a strong track record of compliance with fishing best practices in the efforts to sustain our fishing waters, manage systems, limit catches when necessary, and remain aware of possible endangered species. It's all about sustainability and self-sufficiency, catching only what you need, doing the right thing. So what can you do? Buy local, ask questions when you dine out about where your meal came from, and when? Check the QR codes and URL links on store-bought fish product and then go on=-line to find out what fishing method was used, where the product came from, and when it got to the store.

You can also visit for more information. Akamai shoppers and casual weekend fishers can do their part to ensure that we keep this vital industry vibrant, supported, and in a position to thrive for generations to come. It's Seafood Month, and hopefully you'll see the value in supporting this industry which supplies about 30-million pounds of good eats from our ocean to us every year. Think about it…
