Think About It: Wiki wiki Likelike

As the group Boston once famously sang, "it's been such a long time"... That's the tune most drivers warble whenever they are told of an impending road repair job. Nothing gets done on time… nothing. Not H-3, not repaving jobs, not Kalanianaole, Nimitz, or Kapi`olani, not lighting repairs after copper wires are stolen, not the Saddle Road. The list goes on like an unending highway.

Ah, but now we have closure, or rather re-opening of the Wilson Tunnel after emergency repairs were completed last week on the Likelike Highway, repairs necessitated by some snapped rods in the ceiling. The work was finished on November 4th, after an earlier projection that all lanes would be re-opened by today. 30 of 700 total steel rods were replaced due to damage, barriers were removed, and traffic began again to freely flow, as best it can, on Likelike Highway, causing relief for beleaguered Windward residents who saw a month of slowdowns on the Pali and H-3 routes throughout the days and nights. I know, that's nothing compared to the daily slowdowns seen in recent years in Hawaii Kai or currently witnessed due to the rail project, but driving discomfort, nonetheless. Ah, and repaving is coming to the Likelike and Pali Highways over the next two years.

So kudos to the project engineers and workers for your efficiency and sense of urgency. If only every project came in on time, on budget, and on target. Right after hearing about the Likelike update, I went to a nearby mall to pick up something I needed, only to find an escalator out with no stairway nearby, a cash register not working in the store I had to visit, an illegible receipt handed to me by a "not my fault" clerk, after a fruitless search for a product that was unavailable after the store's website had touted it as being available. Back to reality. Think about it…
