Think About It: Season of Joy?

Happy time or hectic time? It's your call. It's that time of the year for giving thanks, giving gifts, and giving time- be it in traffic, in malls, or in public service. How you deal with this whirlwind of holiday time will have a causal effect in direction proportion to your relative happiness quotient over the next six weeks.

The aloha spirit surely helps those of us who call Hawai`i home during this busy season, but as patience is tested, how will you react? Will you put yourself into overdrive to try and satisfy all constituents- family, friends, and co-workers? Will you get to enjoy the spirit of the season, or will the Grinch infiltrate your thinking and then your actions? Perhaps acknowledging early on that you can't be all things to all people, and can't be everywhere at once, and can't do everything for everybody will allow you to just say no to certain events, activities, or commitments. Trying to be in two places at the same time normally results in zero satisfaction.

That doesn't make you a sourpuss or killjoy. It might actually bring more smiles to your puss and make you a real joy to be around. Tick, tick, tick... the holiday season is coming, but it need not be oppressive or feel like the flu season. Celebrate joyfully, take time to breathe, make people feel good while you feel good, and always think about it…
