Think About It: UH Action Traction

Dave Matlin laid out the facts last week, and now we'll see what the response is… again. It's not the first time an Athletics Director at the University of Hawai`i Manoa has explained the realities of the college sports world to the powers that be. Matlin, articulate and detail-oriented, asked for an increase in student fees, direct funding from the legislature, and more institutional support from UH, as a start. It would also be nice to see some more direct support from the tourism industry and big donors, but that's another mountain to climb.

The days of expecting basic sponsorships and ticket sales to cover the department shortfalls are long gone, and even a new football coach and hopefully a winning football team won't solve that problem in 2016 or beyond. With unique travel costs compounded by conference-mandated, Hawaii-only subsidy costs for incoming conference opponents, the formula has to change now, or else the expectations must be lowered in terms of running the UH athletics department as a business entity. It's time to adjust for reality.

90% of college athletic departments lose money, yes, that's 90%, and most of the money-losing public colleges get far more financial help from the state and their students than UH does. So here we are again- the truth has been exposed and enough people hopefully realize the value of a division I athletics program in the development of its students to keep plodding ahead. Now is a time for action, making a statement, support, understanding, action, vision, commitment, and action. Oh yeh, did I mention "action"? Think about it…
