Think About It: Bad Ban Plan

The University of Hawai`i Athletics Department is appealing the sanctions placed on its basketball program, including the no post-season play penalty next year. It's a wise appeal, though you have to wonder what new information the NCAA (or No Clue At All) will hear that will make it wake up and treat UH more fairly. Yes, there were institutional lapses, including trusting the head coach, but the most egregious errors were addressed immediately by UH when it self-sanctioned by firing its head coach, fined itself $10,000, cut official visit and basketball practice hours, and forfeited wins from the past couple of years.

To penalize the current coaches and players further seems punitive. The rest of this year might be perceived by some of the team's juniors as a try out for another college program for their senior year if the sanction isn't lifted, as they can leave this spring and play their final collegiate season elsewhere. And while UH already has a scholarship reduction included in the penalty column, how much harder will it be to recruit players for next year if some high schoolers or potential junior college transfers are put off by the no-post-season-in-2017 clause? And UH will already be forfeiting scholarships due to other NCAA sanctions imposed.

Was that really the intent for the NCAA- to penalize Hawai`i even further than it seems on the surface? If the penalties stand as laid out, isn't it probable that this program will suffer beyond the one-year post-season ban due to the ripple effect of that ruling? The coach who was let go got an approximately 10-game suspension IF he coaches a college team within the next three years? This, after he "provided false or misleading information during the investigation, allowed his director of operations to participate in coaching activities, failed to report a possible violation, and asked his men's basketball team to keep the matter ‘in house'", all according to the NCAA report? Perhaps the NCAA will lighten up on UH with this appeal. Don't bet on it, because of course we can't have betting with college sports now, can we? Think about it…
