Think About It: Legislative Action

The state legislature is now in session, and in its usual manner, will try to cram a lot of discussion about a lot of topics into a window of 60 active legislative days. This year's session is scheduled for adjournment on May 5, and bills that need to crossover to the House or Senate from the other side must do so by March 10. Bill introduction begins this week.

There are a whole lot of proposed and detailed bills that need to be read, digested, tweaked, debated, and finalized in some form if those bills are to have a chance to move forward for the governor to approve or not approve. Part-time legislatures like we have in Hawai`i have been around since this country's inception; in the old days, legislators had to get back to their regular jobs- farming and such. Many believed back then and still believe now that keeping the sessions short preclude too much government intervention and micromanagement over the public- that's us.

Whatever your feelings might be about the local legislative process, the next few months are a really good time for you to pay attention to what might be coming our way. For whether they like your opinion or not, your elected officials do need to hear from you, you do matter, and your feelings and logical thoughts should weigh into the discussions about which items move forward and which items do not. Act now with your voice and the mighty pen… or simply accept what comes down in May and live with it. Think about it…
