"The Weekly Daily Pidgin," a 30-minute comedy series hosted and produced by Hawai‘i comedian Andy Bumatai, will air entirely in pidgin beginning Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 7:00-7:30 p.m.
"The Weekly Daily Pidgin" was inspired by a sub-series of Bumatai's popular YouTube channel called "The Weekly Pidgin," which was refreshed daily with skits, reports, and monologues reported only in the pidgin. After receiving over 1.5 million views on one of his first episodes, the videos became a local internet sensation. The new show will air weekly on Tuesdays from 7:00-7:30 p.m.
"I can guarantee that this show won't be like any other, and will resonate with locals who speak the language," said Bumatai. "This new series is sure to create a sense of nostalgia for those who have ever lived in or experienced our beautiful island culture."
Born on the Hawaiian plantation fields, Pidgin English has since transformed into the unmistakable language of the locals. In November 2015, after data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that it was spoken in a large number of homes throughout the islands, the dialect was formally declared an official language of Hawai‘i.
"The KFVE ‘ohana is thrilled to feature another fantastic show hosted by Andy Bumatai" said John Fink, General Manager of KFVE the Home Team. "The show will be a reverent nod to local culture and will strike close to home with locals as Andy weaves in his comedic magic."
Bumatai has hosted numerous other shows on KFVE the Home Team, including "Toolin' Around," "The Andy Bumatai Show," and "In The Car." In addition, he has won the Hoku award for "Most Promising Artist" and "Best Comedy Performance," and has recorded a number of comedy albums throughout his career.
