Think About It: A Few Thoughts...

A few unconnected thoughts as we head into the weekend… it seemed rather classless that so many Honolulu City council members opted not to show up at Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell's State of the City address last week. Yes, we get that there are major rifts, as there always seem to be between the mayor and the city council, but unless there were some major mitigating circumstances preventing council members from attending, couldn't they have at least shown the respect to sit there for 30-minutes in deference to the office and the event?

Sometimes, Mother Nature herself provides the best marketing Hawai`i can get- like when Kilauea Volcano acts up and gets national coverage, or when 50+ foot waves lead organizers to give a green light, thumbs up, and mighty shaka to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational surf event. Live streaming worldwide of this event drew 1.2-million viewers, while Facebook reports that videos from the event have been watched over 13-million times. Moments like the Eddie reminds even those of us who live here just how special the dramatic beauty and grandeur is of these very islands.

And finally, if you're looking for a reason to celebrate this weekend, March 10 is Middle Name Pride Day and it's also Popcorn Lover's Day this year, while March 11 is Worship of Tools Day, and March 12 is Gril Scouts Day so toast yourself and your possibly weird, family-based, middle name with a big box of buttered popcorn and some Thin Mints and go ahead and eat it all with a shovel or a trowel. Yes, we humans can celebrate anything, even pointless editorial endings. Think about it…
