Think About It: All Hail Snail Rail

Rail, rail, the gang's all here; what the heck do we care? A takeoff on a song that is now 99-years old, but perhaps truer than ever with more back and forth going on about the newly assumed costs of the rapid transit system vs. the actual costs vs. the perceived costs vs. more estimates vs. the time frame for completion- it's enough to make a taxpaying consumer say, "who cares, we've lost, how'd ‘Bows baseball do today?"

And that seems to be what's going on, as this ever-morphing plan that seemed so simple just eight years ago when initially passed by Oahu's voters, is again being questioned for costs, timing, direction, etc. Estimates for completion are now six-years away, and I'll bet those in town can't wait for work to begin along the overcrowded Kalihi corridor after seeing the interminable delays and busted up streets of Kapolei, Pearl City and other areas still under construction.  The entire project was to be completed by 2019; now it's slated for completion in 2022. Wanna bet?

From an original $5.2 billion budget, this choo choo is now projected to end up costing more than $6.5-billion. Do I hear $8-billion? How about $10-billion? Sold! And with new questions every month come the inevitable political ramifications in an election year as everyone throws in their two cents. So all hail the rail that moves like a snail as we lay another nail over hill and dale, and problems continue to unveil and numb residents say what the hail. Think about it…
