Think About It: Mointy Python's Flying Rail System

"And now for something completely different". That was a line from a long-running Monty Python's Flying Circus skit as the giddy British comedy troupe jumped from one nonsensical bit to another 45 years ago. And now, it seems we have just a wee bit of Monty Python-ism encroaching on the very serious rail transit issue.

We've lost an honorable HART Board chair as Don Horner stepped down amid political shenanigans and shell game obfuscation as to who's in charge, and now we have some calling for the rail to stop at Middle Street, far short of its original destination end at Ala Moana Center, due to a possible shortfall of funds. Really? Sounds like Alaska's infamous bridge to nowhere. Soon, we might have the rail stopping where it starts, before it starts, but maybe those cement overhangs can be used as land for temporary housing for the homeless.

Cost estimates from 2008 to 2016 obviously went up, legal entanglements ran amok, electrical line issues were not well-resolved, tenants along the way have felt betrayed by buyout offers, and hey, we haven't even reached town yet. Can you imagine what things will be like in Kalihi and downtown for years as pillars go in and hard-to-reach businesses go under? As the league leader in national traffic congestion, we could become a dynasty in that category for years to come as the rail work plods through town. But the rail will help to alleviate traffic- someday. And now for something completely different? From government? Not really… it feels like same old, same old? Think about it…
