Think About It: Pro Bowled Over

So the Pro Bowl is apparently going away. Some would argue that the Pro Bowl went away when tackling was unofficially banned and when they stopped playing the game as a battle between the AFC and NFC, and instead started playing the game as a Fantasy Football match-up coached by retired all stars like Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice.

Unlike the NHL all-star game, where the unwritten rule is that the brutal checks of the regular season and post-season simply disappear, you can't play football without real contact; well, you can't play the type of football we all like to see. So now we have other suitors and the players will be relegated to performing in Orlando, a real treat for those players who were just in Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, or Miami a few weeks earlier. You thought the number of injuries and no shows was big before for this post-season spectacle?

The Pro Bowl and the NFL in Hawaii have had a great relationship for 34 of the past 36-years, with lots of loyal local fans joining in with the visitors at Aloha Stadium. But recent year's threats of moving the game, a sure local sign of lack of loyalty, hefty ticket price increase years ago, and the very nature of how the game has to be played now to help save the bodies of multi-million dollar stars means the entity itself might not be around anywhere for much longer, which is sad, but possibly true. Think about it…
