Think About It: Rail Route Reconsideration

Every statement made by new Rapid Transportation Board chair Colleen Hanabusa makes her sound more incredulous as to what's going and what had been going on than her last statement as the original and subsequent planning of this project becomes more and more questionable- not necessarily the project, but the plans. Now there's an indication that perhaps Dillingham Boulevard is not the best route to bring the choo choo into town. Really? We're just speculating about that now?! That seems to be a pretty big deal.

Nobody official wants to second guess the original plans because no one wants to throw the original planners under the bus, or the train, but second guessing is the game du jour for just about every phase of this plan to link Kapolei with Honolulu via a modern day transit system. Disruption to drivers and pedestrians in town, ripping up streets to bury electrical lines, the width of the streets, floating deadlines, increased funding needs, the safety of the power lines and Hawaiian Electric repair truck capabilities, overall costs, business disruption and inaccessibility for months if not years, quitting chairpersons- the list of concerns goes on and on, while the train doesn't, and won't- for at least eight more years!

2019 was the originally planned completion date. Then 2022; now it's 2024. Even the rail's federal cohorts say there's a 35% chance the project will not come in at the newly-suggested $8.1-billion cost.  Ya think? But don't worry, as Moe, Larry, and Curly will be brought in shortly to work on engineering, upkeep, and new predictions. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Think about it…
