Think About It: Hip Zip Trip

Zippity doo-dah! It looks like the Zipper Lane will doublein size within the next couple of months, which should provide some addedrelief and incentive for commuters coming into Honolulu from the west side onweekdays. And the high-occupancy vehicles lanes will also stay open an extrahalf-hour each morning, until 9am. Now if we can only get reverse Zipper Lanesheading back out in a westerly direction to ramp up, it would surely make thatdrive more manageable after 3:30pm daily.

While a westbound lane past Aloha Stadium into Pearl Citywas added a year or so ago, having the Zipper Lanes in the afternoon headinginto the setting sun would sure be helpful. Creative measures have come forwardin recent years. The move to add an extra highway lane on both sides between thePali exit downtown and the Punahou area has been extremely helpful to commutersseven days a week, despite some early concerns about skinnier lanes.

We need to see more of these innovative, yet affordable, approaches to keeping the flow of traffic from getting worse in Honolulu and inheavily trafficked areas on all the islands. After all, as islands, there arejust so many possible arteries and reasonable ways in which to build andexpand. Yes, someday we're supposed to have a rail system in place, but that'sapparently eight-years away- at least. So here's to sensible traffic solutions, intelligent development in planning for residences and businesses down theroad, and no texting while driving or limping along. Think about it…
