Think About It: Twilight Zone Rail

The rail situation has now officially entered the twilight zone. For those too young to remember, "The Twilight Zone" was a great old TV show and the term "twilight zone" is defined in some places as another dimension, a state of surrealism.  Surely that's where we are today with HART as prices keep going up, the supposed routes keep changing, and the people in charge say "I don't know" when asked what's up?!

One idea of moving the town placement of the rail from Dillingham Boulevard to Nimitz Highway could possibly add another 10-years to the timetable. And this is already a project that, in its current state, is not slated for completion until at least 2024. Other options including ending the rail at Middle Street, which would seem to defeat the purpose of people using it to get all the way to ala Moana Boulevard, and would necessitate adding more buses, which can't help traffic flow and seems to defeat the purpose of a rail system.

Pillars pounded 40-feet into the ground in West Oahu might have to go 280-feet deep around the Dillingham area.  Whoops! One suggested solution is to build the rail only as far as current funding allows, which right now seems to be about 1,000 yards from where it started- just kidding. Rail board members spoke a week ago about not being optimistic about any planned changes or funding models. Perhaps we can make the elevated tracks into a street hockey, street basketball, or drag racing outlet. Yes, we really are now in the twilight zone of rail construction, but unlike the old TV show, this thing's not getting canceled. Think about it…
