Think About It: Cool Problem

The state finally agreed to deal with the oppressive and depressing lack of air in our public schools this legislative session. A promise or stated goal was to have 1,000 classrooms cooled down by year end- a bullish, aggressive, and strong stance. Well, guess what? It's probably not going to happen.  Perhaps due to exuberance after waiting for 30-years to deal with hot air, the reality is that pricing for the systems has come in much higher than was anticipated.

And the contractors' prices are coming in much higher than planned- not a huge surprise due to the on-going construction boom just about everywhere in the state. Only a small group of contractors was asked to bid- and e perhaps that wasn't the best idea. So while you'd like to give the state credit for being bold in stating we would alleviate 1,000 sweat boxes by year end, it now looks like that was more like a political campaign promise- and we know those are often not met or kept.

So now we will see how efficiently and quickly the state and the various elements involved in this air movement can come together, get the pricing and the systems right and get the job done. It goes to show you how little work was done and how few details were known before this sudden quest for hot air relief was embarked upon. So stay tuned, if the first 1,000 classrooms get done by spring time, it surely can still be seen as a victory for our keiki and progress in dealing with a long-time ignored problem. But if not… think about it…
