Think About It: Mark Made His Mark

Just three months ago, I had a phone conversation with Hawai`i House Representative Mark Takai. Mark had sent me an email from Washington, D.C., thanking me for my editorial support of the UH Cancer Center and he told me "no need to get back to me". But there was a need- at least for me. So we talked on the phone for 15-minutes that Monday morning in late-April and swapped stories about cancer, grappling with it, staying positive amid loving support and, as always, he was calm, clear, concise, and caring.

Mark Takai served his family, his country and his state with honor and passion. Even among those who might not have always agreed with his politics, he was known a class act, a shining light among some dim bulbs, well-educated, well-connected, well-grounded, and well-focused. He fought for what he felt was right, whether or not it was politically advantageous or not. He had a soul and he never forgot his roots.

He fought for his fellow student body as UH student body president, he fought for ideas at UH's Ka Leo newspaper, he fought for UH funding in athletics and beyond, he fought for his country, literally, and he fought for the people of Hawai`i as a locally- and nationally-elected official. And finally, he fought the battle against a horrid ailment and handled it with aplomb and grace. I am so glad I got to know him a bit over the past 20-years, and so glad for what he did and how well he represented us in so many ways. Hopefully, part of his legacy will be that his class, demeanor, and altruism will rub off on others. Think about it…
