Think About It: Olo-WOW!-lu

Perhaps you have wondered if taking a stand really does makea difference when you're dealing with the government or bureaucracy. Perhapsyou've always felt that the government will do whatever it's going to do,regardless of how the people feel. Well, look no further than the seawall alongHonoapiilani Highway to see that ruffling some feathers and organizing apro-active movement can make a difference.

Environmentalists and others protested a planned seawallalong the Maui highway near the Olowalu Store in west Maui. The plan was tobuild a seawall and put up boulders to keep further erosion at bay. Localconcern about the monk seals who frequent the beach, as well as beach visitors, caused the Hawaii Department of Transportation to revisit the project. Thatconcern and open-mindedness led to constructive talks with community activistsfollowed by a short spurt of peaceful, roadside protests. And now, the state DOTsays it will work with the community to determine how best to protect thehighway, the seals, and the people, perhaps by moving the driving lanes in amore mauka direction, away from the beach.

To an outsider, this sure looks like a win-win situation, for Maui drivers wary of erosion, ruined roadways, and wave concerns, forbeachgoers, for area fishermen, and for the relaxing monk seals. It just goesto show you that civil conversation, rational thinking, and egolessdecision-making can make for a potent force with the powers that be and thepowerful voice of the people. Encourage passion, avoid drama… sounds like awinner. Think about it…
