Think About It: School Rules

So what is a college degree really worth? Time after time, we have seen studies showing the value of getting that diploma, and yet as costs continue to rise for higher education, some ponder the real value of the parchment. Well a University of Hawaii study just added more facts to the question as it found that a UH graduate with an associate's degree will make about $360,000 more over his or her lifetime than a high school graduate who never went on to college. That comes out to $8,000 per year over a 45-year work career. And if you pick up a UH bachelor's degree, you'll earn almost a million dollars more than your local high school pal who chose to forego college, which equates to earning over $22,000 more annually over a 45-year career.

And this total doesn't even take into account all of the other elements that can make the college experience some of the most important years in terms of your overall development. College can provide great lessons in gaining independence, collaborating with others, time management and other skills development, overcoming adversity, articulating in front of others, exploring new areas of possible interest and different points of view… the list goes on and on, including life satisfaction being higher for college grads than non-grads.

One reason to tell your kids to do as well as they can in high school is not so much about being part of the system, but rather about giving them choices later- like when kids decide where to go to college, you have options when you succeed in high school. Options in life in all areas are usually good. Bottom line, if you're interested in your future bottom line- stay in school. Yes, even with the loans and all. Think about it…
