Think About It: Bold Move

Formerly Republican State House representative Beth Fukumoto took the bold step to quit the Republican Party a week ago. While she said constituent feedback the last two months based, in part, on her resentment of President Trump, pushed her to make the move, she now finds herself in a bit of no-person's land. For now she has to convince two constituent bases that she is the right person at the right time to complete the job she set out to accomplish when she began her career as a Republican eight years ago.

First she has to convince the voters- over 50% of whom obviously approved of her as a Republican last November- that she will still represent their best interests going forward. At the same time, she has to convince the Democratic Party grand poohbahs that she has the party's best interest at heart in her drive to succeed as a legislator. And since Fukumoto says a major platform of hers is to help provide more affordable housing to erase some of the growing disparity here between the haves and the have-nots, she will undoubtedly need to rock a big boat that has sheltered many people in positions of power for many years, some of whom placate financial supporters year after year by not knocking the status quo in many areas.

After all, one can only affect change from the inside by remaining on the inside, and thus getting re-elected often trumps (pardon the pun) true efforts to augment change to a local system that appears frayed at the edges at the very least. As for local Republican bosses, having another one bite the dust will do nothing to force that very system to become more accountable and pro-active on a regular basis. Think about it…
