Think About It: Garbage Gab

The Honolulu City Council has decided that the idea of a $10monthly trash pickup fee is a bunch of garbage, at least for now. The Councillast week decided not to move forward on this initiative proposed by MayorCaldwell, opting instead to look at possibly raising property taxes to helpfund the weekly opala gathering.

The administration wants only those receiving the curbsidepickup services to pay for them, suggesting that's it's "…more of a fee for aservice" since everyone doesn't get or use the available service. This argumentmight be used by just about anybody for just about anything offered bygovernment. Services cost money. Fixed rail? People on the windward and eastsides are paying for that, but won't use it 99% of the time. Public schools?About 15% of people send their kids to private schools here, twice the nationalaverage by the way, but understand that there is a civil or ethical obligationto help pay for public schools, like it or not, use ‘em or not.

When it comes to trash, each island does its own thing.Hawaii County does not provide trash pickup, while Maui and Kauai apparentlypay higher fees for fewer services, according to a Honolulu Star-Advertiserarticle. Bottom line: trash collection is getting more expensive, and so iseverything else. Looks like some pencil-sharpening will have to come into playas the City formalizes its upcoming final budget on more items than just theheavy toll of garbage. Think about it…
