HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A High Surf Warning has been issued for the north and west shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai and the north-facing shores of Maui for a large late-season northwest swell.

The warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service said waves along north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau, and the north shores of Maui, Oahu, and Molokai will rise to 20 to 25 feet on Friday. West shores of Molokai will build to 15 to 20 feet Friday.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect for west-facing shores of Oahu. Waves will be 15 to 20 feet.

The advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.

The large waves occasionally sweep across portions of beaches with very strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents that will make entering the water hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
