Think About It: Military Posture

Concerns about North Korea, uncertainty about China, doubtsabout Russia, questions about the Philippines. Much has been said and writtenlately about the many volatile spots or potential problem areas in the FarEast, which is actually far west of us. Much has been theorized about unstable regimesor leaders, veiled threats, and the potential for real conflict. Some worryabout Hawaii's vulnerability due to our simple geography.

One thing these uneasy times provides is the realization allthe way back in our nation's capital just how vital a strong and visiblemilitary presence is in Hawaii. As Hawaii is the gateway to America, at leastcoming from the Far East or possibly even the Middle East, making sure that would-beaggressors or potential enemies know that Hawaii is well prepared is asignificant statement. And while it might be a bit scary, forearmed andforewarned is surely better than not being prepared or pretending that nopossible threats exist.

Over the past decade, military cutbacks were often the rule-warfare is no longer a conventional exercise in many arenas. Port locations andinterior military installations on the mainland felt the cuts. That doesn'tseem like an immediate plan for the current administration. So while ourproximity to possible trouble areas evokes some angst, it also sends the signalback to our leaders in Washington, D.C., that the military force in Hawaii shouldnot be weakened in any way in this current era of uncertainty and risingtensions. Think about it…
