Think About It: Mo’ mentum

Good news last week that the Battleship Missouri Memorialwill remain in its current location for at least the next 25-years. After aseries of short-term leases over the past 18-years, the Navy and the USSMissouri Memorial Association signed a long-term deal which ensures that thishistoric ship will remain in close proximity to the sunken USS ArizonaMemorial, both vivid and tangible reminders of events that took place over70-years ago and changed the world forever.

This collaboration between the Navy and the MemorialAssociation is a great example of a public-private partnership where both sideswin. The Navy gets a percentage of ticket sales from visitors to the ship, while the non-profit group in charge of the vessel gets a chance to upgrade andretro-fit the exhibit and its surrounding area now that it has secured along-term guarantee that it will continue to have a home in its current berthat Pearl Harbor.

Last year, more than 645,000 people, more than ever before, visitedthe "Mighty Mo'", where the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed inSeptember, 1945, ending the United States' war against Japan. Juxtaposed atPearl Harbor by the USS Arizona, which solemnly represented "a date which willlive in infamy" less than four years earlier, the USS Missouri will continue toeducate and remind people for years to come about the many lessons of war andthis country's greatest generation. Think about it…
