Think About It: Sailing Homeward

In just over a week from now, the three-year,round-the-world voyage of Hokule`a and its sister vessel, Hikianalia, will cometo a triumphant conclusion as it enters Waikiki via Magic Island for a publicceremony, which is currently planned for next Saturday. The amazing trek thatsaw the sailing crews visit more than 150 ports in 18 countries will finallycome to a successful end. But the memories for those who have been on board andfor those touched at each of those ports of call or who followed online willlive forever.

Over 250 personnel saw time on this voyage from its launchin Hilo three years ago until today. The Malama Honua (or "Care for the Earth")Worldwide Voyage proved many points, made many friends, and has provided agreat history lesson for keiki and adults alike throughout its journeys in thismodern era. Hopefully, the 40,000 trip has provided great insight andreflection for governments and citizens alike to understand the need to takebetter care of our resources, realizing that this planet is a gift that needsto be cared for, just like its human, animal, and plant inhabitants. Perhapsthis voyage provided a much-needed reminder to some.

Whether or not you subscribe to the loud call by some fordrastic action and human intervention to help ensure cleaner oceans and safer playgroundsfor ocean denizens going forward, this trip was at least a reminder for many. Ourwaters are to be cherished, not ignored and taken for granted.  It is certainly with great pride and a truesense of accomplishment that Hokule`a finally returns to our shores afterrealizing its grandiose plans in grand style via its worldwide voyage over thepast few years. Maika`i and mahalo! Think about it…
