Think About It: Breaking New Ground

The fact that groundbreaking on a project to build new homesfor the homeless took place near Sand Island last week is groundbreaking untoitself. That a public-private concoction could conceive of and actually beginwork on such a project without far too many committees, studies, and meetingsover the past year is extraordinary, and a testament to the skill, passion, andcommitment of local businessman, Duane Kurisu and others.

While far too many projects and ideas locally get discussed, tossed around, and often times ignored, this project is now under way andshould see the first families moving in before year end. Astounding! All of theparties involved, both public and private, had to come together to make thisdream become a reality in record time. And the plan here is to provide thepeople in need with a community, not just basic living quarters. Another localbusiness guru has even offered jobs in the nearby area for those committed toworking, so that they can possibly walk to work.

And as excitement and buildings grow, the obvious questionis – what's next and where's next? For if this project can work, flourish, andlead as an example, perhaps a bigger dent can be made in the homeless situationthroughout our state when other like-minded business executives work with thesystem, or help to change it, to make a big difference in many people's lives. After all, isn't that one of the reasons we are all here in the first place- tomake a difference? Kudos to Kurisu! Think about it…
