Think About It: The 2018 Race Pace

Aaannnd… the race is on. Yes, the political season got underway about a year before the August 11, 2018, primary election here when severalcandidates announced plans recently to run for lieutenant governor. Before thatoccurred, current lieutenant governor, Shan Tsutsui, hinted strongly that hemight leave office early and head back to his home county of Maui for a run atthe mayor's seat there in 2018. Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and Hawaii StateSenators Josh Green and Jill Tokuda have indicated that they will run for the state's#2 slot, so primary season is under way and should be quite active locally.Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho and state representative Andria Tupola might begubernatorial candidates, and U.S House representative Colleen Hanabusa has announcedthat she will challenge incumbent governor, David Ige, for the top slot nextyear.

As the saying goes, "you can't tell the players without ascorecard", and that 2018 local card is getting filled awfully quickly.Hanabusa's effort to become only the 2nd person in state history toreplace an incumbent governor means that she'll have to beat the 1stperson to ever unseat a sitting governor- as Ige soundly beat Neil Abercrombiein 2014. Hanabusa's departure from Washington, D.C., obviously means that weshould soon see a slew of tempted candidates come forward to run for herto-be-vacant Congressional seat.

What it all means is that you- the voters, the decision-makers,the ones affected by the decisions these elected officials make- now haveplenty of time to educate yourselves on the differences the candidates havewith one another and the similarities some of them have with your owndeeply-held views, convictions, needs, and beliefs. Ignorance is not bliss inthis case, and the more you know, the better informed you'll be come votingtime, as it should be. Think about it…
