Think About It: BIG Deal

Sometimes it's better to be plucky than lucky.Three young ladies who had been dealt a tough hand were acknowledged 10-daysago as they were each handed a scholarship check. It's part of the EIH BRAHprogram- Educated in Hawaii, Born and Raised As Hawaiian. Get it- EIHBRAH! It's about soul, not bloodline. It's about spirit, drive, optimism, tenacity, humanity and humility.

Every year since 2013, localbanker Neill Char and a small hui of his friends select localpublic high school participants who've come through the Big Brothers/BigSisters Hawaii program and have had to overcome some tough luck anddifficult circumstances to succeed greatly at one of our local, publichigh schools. What these kids need, and now get, is help to pay some oftheir University of Hawaii tuition. Friends helping strangers. Philanthropistsmolding our future. People making a positive difference. A group offriends simply came together and are making a difference- humbly, quietly, and meaningfully.

I was lucky enough to attend the recent low-keyluncheon where checks were distributed to the excited youngsters. Thisyear's scholarship recipients aren't just going to attend UH, though allscholarship recipients do go to UH, as Neil and friends try to keep some of ourbest students at their alma mater. The kids I met are laser-focusedalready- one aspires to become a journalist, one anarchitect, and one a veterinarian- and all will someday be givingback to Hawaii. A Nice way to say "mahalo". Check out the BigBrothers/Big Sisters website ( you want to help make a difference. EIH BRAH- there's yourfeel-good story of the day. Think About it...
