Think About It: Teacher Trials

Without a doubt, there is an unfortunate correlation betweenthe WalletHub analysis that says Hawaii is the worst state in the country to bea teacher and the fact that we now hear annually about the dire need for moreteachers locally. With low rankings for salaries, school system quality, incomegrowth potential, and student-teacher ratios, the WalletHub survey shines a dimlight on the opportunities locally for aspiring teachers.

UH is providing a program to allow more people to earnteaching credentials while still working at their current jobs in an attempt tobring more teachers into the fold. But the problem is growing, with the numberof teaching vacancies at the start of the school year increasing every year nowsince 2012. Pushing more people to earn advanced degrees conveniently is agreat idea, but more needs to be done at the state level to address theover-crowding and under-funding situations which cause many to avoid a possiblyrewarding career helping to shape the lives of our keiki, the people who willsomeday run our state.

Teachers work hard and they work long hours with all kindsof administrative responsibilities. They sometimes pay for necessities out oftheir own pockets. Surveys like WalletHub's that indicate no light at the endof the financial tunnel should be seen as more than just a speed bump. Whilemost don't enter the profession to get rich, the difficulties posed here can appearto be mountains that simply won't be climbed by far too many who mightinitially see teaching as a great way to give back and make a difference. Andthat needs to be addressed at the top levels now. Think about it…
