Think About It: Smoke & Furor

There's a new haze over the budding marijuana industry in Hawaii, and it's not the cloud you think of when you think of pakololo. Actually, it's the cloud of uncertainty placed on the burgeoning legal marijuana industry nationwide, as the federal government rescinded its policy that kept the feds from prosecuting people for legal pot sales. Of course "legal" in the world of pot is a state-based term, and the number of states allowing for the sale of both medical and recreational pot continues to grow, while the feds still count marijuana as a schedule 1 drug, putting it into the same category as heroin, ecstasy, peyote and LSD. Believe it or not, cocaine, oxycodone, and meth fall into the less dangerous, schedule 2, category on the fed's charts.

The Federal Drug Agency simply says that marijuana has not been proven to be safe and effective, and thus has not budged on its position in 45-years. But this latest confusion comes at a time when pot dispensaries statewide are gearing up to provide people with via medical marijuana, one of 29 states now allowing for the pain-dulling sensation that pot provides. Seven states now allow for recreational pot usage, yet we still have this huge chasm where the feds not only do not recognize pot as a viable medical alternative to pain pills, which have become a huge addiction problem nationwide, but the federal government still considers marijuana one of the worst mind-altering products as it keeps it on the Schedule 1 listing. The feds can even sue states that don't abide by its laws, archaic as some people might think those laws are.So, we are at an impasse. Perhaps everyone should just sit down, have a stiff drink, and rectify this, before a drawn out course case numbs us all. Am I a patient looking for relief or am I a criminal, subject to fines and possibly jail time? Really, should that still be the choice people must make in 2018? Think about it…
