Think About It: Flu Blues

Far too often, people talk about the flu like it's no big deal, like it's simply something that comes around for a few months each year and then fades away. Did you know that flu was the 8th leading cause of death in this country last year? Did you know that the flu resulted in over 11-million hospital visits last year, according to the Center for Disease Control as reported last week by the Honolulu Star Advertiser? Did you know that we are seeing a concerning spike in reported flu cases in Hawaii in just this past month?

The annually-developed flu vaccination is not always effective at taking care of a particularly virulent strain of the disease, as the serum must be developed months in advance of flu season based on medical estimates on which strains are most likely to be a major problem. Even a less effective shot can help to mitigate the effects of others strains, and also minimize the effects on you? And no, you can't get the flu from a flu shot. It is an inactive strain of a virus, and people who do get sick shortly after getting a flu shot are usually suffering from another illness with similar symptoms, or they might have picked up a flu bug before the inoculation occurred.

But it amazes me how many thoughtless people here still sneeze without covering up, cough without lifting an inner elbow to muffle it, or come to work while having a low-grade fever or other obvious flu symptoms. Wash up, cover up, rest up, clean up- all ways to help combat this potentially deadly illness, year after year. You can influence influenza. Do the right thing for yourself and those around you today. Think about it…
