Think About It: Housing & Fences & You

A couple of local government building suggestions highlighted recently have caught my attention: the Hawaii Public Housing Authority is working with other entities on plans to build some affordable housing along the transit line in Pearl Highlands, near Aloha Stadium, and in Kalihi. Mores sites will hopefully be identified soon and then development plans can begin. Let's hope that red tape is avoided as multiple agencies will be involved, let's make sure the unit costs are truly affordable for regular wage earners locally, and let's get these edifices built before the complete rail system is fully operational- because that's at least eight years away.

As hopeful and positive as the transit oriented development projects are sounding, there is another story about a ridiculous estimate for a fence to be built around the Hawaii State Hospital which would cost between $17 and $24 million. Yes, that's right, for a fence. You could probably enhance internal security at the state facility for far less than $20 million or so for an outdoor fence, a fence topped with barbed wire. And of course, if people can walk out the front door unattended to, a fence isn't going to be the best answer at the Kaneohe facility. Perhaps the fence is a Gucci or Versace design, and thus the price tag suggested is realistic and fair.

We see some positive signs for housing and a questionable suggestion for a costly fence around a facility that has far bigger internal pukas than this fence would solve. Bills are rushing through the legislature and some will impact you- no doubt. Are you paying attention and responding? Are you calling or emailing or showing up to testify? OR will you simply prefer to gripe when all is said and done come early May? Think about it…
